چکیده

Glycosphingolipids occur in most hi her organisms as 200 compounds in this class have been isolated and chemically characterized. In this aper, we compare the structures of several complex glycosphingoEpids and discuss the utilit of fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry in the MSldS mode with collision-assisted dissociation of the ceramide ion to study details of the ceramide structure. The function of several gangliosides in the regulation of growth of cultured cells is also discussed. minor constituents of the plasma membranes o B cells. More than

Structure-based rationale for differential recognition of lacto- and neolacto- series glycosphingolipids by the N-terminal domain of human galectin-8

Glycosphingolipids are ubiquitous cell surface molecules undertaking fundamental cellular processes. Lacto-N-tetraose (LNT) and lacto-N-neotetraose (LNnT) are the representative core structures for lacto- and neolacto-series glycosphingolipids. These glycolipids are the carriers to the blood group antigen and human natural killer antigens mainly found on blood cells, and are also principal comp...

Synthetic Glycosphingolipids for Live-Cell Labeling.

Glycosphingolipids are an important component of cell membranes that are involved in many biological processes. Fluorescently labeled glycosphingolipids are frequently used to gain insight into their localization. However, the attachment of a fluorophore to the glycan part or-more commonly-to the lipid part of glycosphingolipids is known to alter the biophysical properties and can perturb the b...

Glycosphingolipids in Health and Disease

Glycosphingolipids are ubiquitous membrane constituents that are subdivided in neutral or acidic fractions (gangliosides and sulfatides). Their analysis requires extraction and separation by thin-layer chromatography or high-performance liquid chromatography. Ganglioside composition changes occur in response to variations in cellular morphology and function. Glycosphingolipids are implicated in...

Recent controversy surrounding lipid rafts.

Lipid rafts (LRs)are highly enriched in glycosphingolipids, sphingomyelins, and cholesterol membrane microdomains, existing in a liquid-ordered phase of the plasma membrane. In the literature, LRs are also known as detergent-insoluble membranes, detergent-resistant membranes, glycosphingolipids-enriched membranes, detergent-insoluble glycolipid-rich membranes, and Triton-insoluble floating frac...
